Are You an Unpublished Novelist hoping to succeed someday?

Maybe you've sold short stories to magazines?
Or perhaps you write purely for your own pleasure?
  • Do you stick to the word count exactly for short stories or keep it slightly under/ go slightly over?
  • How long do you sit on stories before you submit them?

What has been your best writing breakthrough?

What’s your next writing goal?

I’ve had non-fiction articles, bylines, letters and anecdotal stories to magazines published which has been great,

Getting a short story published in a Writing Magazine or Womag  is my next goal.

I'm booked on a writing course in the New Year, which is exciting. Will tell more nearer the time, but I'll give you a clue here:
It's hosted by a successful short story writer whose name appears on one of the pages of my blog.

BTW Today is my 21st Wedding Anniversary.

Thankfully my hubby doesn't need such subtle reminders!

Of course we haven't changed much ;O)

  2. Happy Anniversary! Lovely photo.

The short story writer's course you've mentioned is very, very good, I've met her briefly and know several people who attend her courses regularly and always come away feeling inspired, so you're in very good hands :o)

With short stories, it's ok to go slightly over or under the word count - just round up or down to the nearest hundred when you submit. Good luck!

  3. Happy 21st wedding anniversary. Choose the magazine you want to submit to and read many stories. One I've been targeting for ages finally accepted one of my stories which is great. I am anal about the word limit and thought I'd aim for one of those shorter stories to break down the door, and this worked. Writing flash fiction has been my best learning curve. I find it makes my prose much sharper and helps me cut superfluous words.

Good luck and keep us posted!

  5. Happy Anni Madeleine, I bet you have something romantic planned.
I know if its a good story you won't be rejected for word count if they like it they will just tell you to fix the word count.
My goals change every day, even my big picture gets bigger everyday too. I a going to work on a short story too Next year and see if I can make it work.

  7. Congratulations on your wedding anniversary and the short story.

Short stories are how I started. I don't think having short stories published actually helped me find my agent but they did boost my confidence and make me believe in myself, which I guess is half the battle.

As for word counts - if they say exactly then give them exactly, otherwise I'd go a bit under, but never over. It's easy to cut out a few words to bring the wordcount down below the limit.

  9. Cute wedding pic. I've had poetry published, but no prose as of yet. Of course, I haven't worked very hard at getting my prose published either. I simply don't know where they fit a lot of the time.

  10. Congrats on the anniversary!!!

And good luck with the short stories. I don't even try with those things. I'm incapable of writing anything under 50K, and even if I was forced to do that I'd have to really press myself to get it done.

  12. Happy Anniversary!

Good luck with the short story writing and course. I never exceed a given word limit if I'm submitting for a comp.

  14. Thanks everyone.
We had a really lovely day.
Thanks too for the word count advice. But can anyone tell me how long they sit on stories before they submit them?
    :O)

  17. Happy anniversary! Monday was my 13th anniversary.

Good luck with attaining your goals. Mine are similar. First I need to start submitting to something other than my blog posts.

  20. Happy anniversary, Madeleine. 21 years is quite an achievement today.

My goal for 2010 was to have short stories published in anthologies and magazines, which I achieved. My goal for 2011 is to write my nano novel and have it ready to submit by the end of the year.

Good luck with your course - I think 2011 is going to be a big year for you!
