Genres/ Narrative Styles

Literature is usually classified as having 2 major TECHNIQUES: poetry and prose: literature, newspapers, magazines, encyclopedias, broadcasting, film, history, philosophy, law and many other forms of communication and 2 MAJOR FORMS: Fiction & Non-Fiction

Within these are different types of narrative:

Short story is a brief work of literature, usually written in narrative prose


Novel is a longer prose narrative which presents fictional characters and events within a sequential story.


Novella is a written, fictional, prose narrative normally longer than a short story but shorter than a novel.


Micro & Flash Fiction is a style of fictional literature or fiction of extreme brevity.


Drama is a specific mode of fiction represented in performance/ screen play


Poetry is a form of literary art that uses verse form, rhyme,  symbolism and metre to evoke atmosphere and intention

And within these are a whole host of GENRES and SUB-GENRES
